This year, 2011, is the 30th anniversary of Lady Diana Spencer and Prince Charles’ legendary royal wedding and what would have been the year of Diana’s 50th birthday. It is also the year that their oldest son, William, marries. So it is perfect that I am completing my (still-in-progress) book, The End of the Fairy-Tale Bride: How Princess Diana Exposed the 'Princess Myth' for All Women, this year! It’s an ideal time to reflect on the bigger picture of Princess Diana’s life and its legacy for women and how that legacy can influence the nature of relationships worldwide. (It certainly affected Prince William and Kate Middleton’s relationship and possibly their marriage. Stay tuned.)
The countless words and images in the vast Princess Diana archive, whether accurate or not, have formed an iconic life of their own. This overflowing library of Diana information entered the realm of cultural mythology even while she was alive and over time has illuminated something vital in our collective consciousness. I believe that events played out on the world stage do so for a reason and tap into some unfathomable place deep inside, moving us toward a new and truer direction of ourselves.
For this book, I wanted to show a “shared rite-of-passage” so experiences from Diana’s life could serve as life lessons for all women. You don’t have to be a princess to have concerns and challenges with love and family and body image and how you want to express your life and what you want it to stand for. What if the message of Diana’s life was for the “every woman” in all of us? “Diana embodied a complexity of contradictions which would enable virtually everyone to see and hear their own story or agenda in her life,” stated astrologer Steffan Vanel in his book, Charles & Diana - The Inside Story: An Astrological-Karmic View.
Diana’s contradictions were indeed our own!
